The MATSEC system provides Malta’s national secondary and post-secondary examinations through the University of Malta’s MATSEC Examinations Board. At the end of compulsory schooling, students may sit for Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations, which assess their knowledge and skills in a range of academic and vocational subjects. SEC examinations may be offered at different levels, depending on the subject and the student’s programme of study. Students can also progress to Matriculation Certificate examinations, which provide the qualifications commonly required for entry to higher education. MATSEC examinations follow nationally established syllabi, assessment criteria and grading procedures, ensuring a consistent and recognised system of certification across Malta.
