Educators Embrace Erasmus+ Positive Psychology in Florence Training Course

Two educators from St Jeanne Antide College Malta, Ms. Paula Calleja Casha and Ms. Melanie Cassar, recently attended an Erasmus+ course in Florence, Italy “Design the Positive: Positive Thinking, Positive Communication, and Positive School Spaces,” held from July 1st to 6th. The training, led by expert Lynda Stella Lattke, was an intensive exploration into the application of positive psychology in educational settings.

The course aimed to equip participants with practical strategies to foster positive thinking, reduce negative self-criticism, and cultivate gratitude, humour, and mindfulness. Through a blend of theory and practice, attendees learned to enhance their own mental well-being and extend these benefits to their students and colleagues.

A significant component of the training focused on positive communication. Participants practiced techniques to improve interactions with themselves and others, aiming to share these skills within their school communities. They also delved into sustainable design principles to create pleasant and conducive learning environments.

Several key theories were explored during the course. Martin Seligman’s concept of “Permah moments” highlighted the aim of positive psychology to increase positive emotions, thus preparing students for enhanced learning experiences. Dan Siegel’s “Wheel of Awareness” was another focal point, promoting mindfulness and integrative practices that help individuals connect more deeply with their internal and external worlds.

Additionally, the course covered Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, emphasizing the multiple layers of environment that influence a child’s development. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs was also examined, illustrating how fulfilling students’ basic needs can lead to higher levels of psychological growth and academic achievement.

Ms. Calleja Casha and Ms. Cassar are eager to implement the strategies and insights gained from the course. They plan to foster a more positive and supportive atmosphere in their school, encouraging both students and colleagues to thrive. Their commitment to enhancing the educational environment through the principles of positive psychology promises to bring lasting benefits to their community.

As schools increasingly recognize the importance of mental and emotional well-being, initiatives like “Design the Positive” underscore the critical role of educators in shaping a brighter, more positive future for their students.
